FLAG OF BARBADOS COLOUR-BENDERA BARBADOS. The flag of Barbados was adopted when the country became independent on November 30, 1966. The broken trident in the center of the flag is derived from the colonial emblem. This Britannia was depicted with a trident, symbolizing her former dominion over the sea.
The fact that the broken trident is depicted, the break with the colonial past portray. In addition to the break with the past, it also portrays the band of Barbados with the sea out. The three points of the trident represent the three principles of democracy

• government of, 
• for, and 
• by the people.

The design for the flag was created by Grantley W. Prescod and was chosen from an open competition arranged by the Barbados government. Over a thousand entries were received.
